The election is coming up and soon the citizens of the United States will choose who will be leading our country for the next four years. So, I was venturing out in the music world and I wanted a song that would be relevant to us students. I came across the song named “Lady America” by Tim Gent featuring Drisana DeSpain. This song was released on October 25, 2016.
I have never heard of these artists before but within the first few seconds, I could tell the song was going to be soulful with laid back production. Gent raps about people living in poverty, police brutality, and hope. For example, he says, “Help us locate a little meaning and a little light. We all have problems and have pain.” After that verse, DeSpain sings the chorus and says “America, America don’t leave me astray.”
The two candidates that are running to represent the United States are Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump. Essentially, DeSpain is saying that she wants the best for our country, but she doesn’t want our future president to lead us on the wrong path. Tim Gent spoke about the song and stated that he’s observing the events that are happening around him. He also says that the country is going through turmoil and that’s what he discusses in his verses. Gent states that the chorus represents hope and he hopes the song as a whole, will help someone through their day.
