On January 20, 2017, we will elect Donald J. Trump as the 45th President of the United States. A year ago the idea of having Trump as president would seem preposterous. There was a crowded field on the GOP side including 16 other highly respected republicans. Throughout the election everyone doubted the real estate mogul.
One by one candidates dropped out, and by May it seemed that Trump had done the impossible. He had taken on the establishment and won. His journey was not over though, and he would take on Secretary Hillary Clinton and defeat her substantially in the electoral college vote 306 to 232.
Now Trump did not win the popular vote, but there is a reason the electoral college exists. If you look at the map based on the way counties voted in the United States, you see a clear winner. If the country voted based on popular vote, cities like Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Antonio would decide every election. If you look at the map and say Clinton should be president, your just plain old wrong. The people spoke and the hardworking middle class voters got their way.
There has been a lot of hate thrown at voters who did cast a ballot for Trump on November 8. These people have been called bigots, racists, xenophobes, and every other name you could possibly think of. I can assure you I know many voters of Trump and they are not bad people. In fact, they are the same people who elected Obama to two terms. It was the undecided middle-class, blue collar worker who elected Trump. They’re the same people who elected Obama and realized they were sick and tired of eight years of failed policies. My 90 year old grandfather, a World War II veteran, and Massachusetts resident his entire life voted for Trump. Trump struck a chord with the middle class, and the middle class got out and voted.
Over the election period, there has been every effort to slander Trump’s name. According to some he is a bad businessman. A multi-billionaire, Trump created all of his money after receiving a one million dollar loan from his father. Four of his businesses have filed for bankruptcy, four out of his thousands of businesses. Not to mention filing for bankruptcy is often used as a business tactic. Saying he is a bad businessman is a joke. Trump has said some things in the past that I do not condone, but we focused on what he said, not others. We forget that Clinton once called African American youth in this country, “superpredators,” and we forget that Bernie Sanders once wrote that, “a woman enjoys intercourse with her man… as she fantasizes being raped by three men simultaneously.”
The American public ignored these disgusting comments and focused on Trump’s 2005 comment. Trump’s comment was just as bad, but it seems to me that there is a double standard here. Trump has also been called racist because he supports the halting of illegal immigration. News flash, that is because it is illegal. There are millions of people trying to enter this country legally and they cannot because of the amounts of illegal immigrants flowing into this country. If anything, Trump is pro-immigration, pro-legal-immigration. Finally, the claim that Trump raped a child is so ridiculous that a court dismissed it immediately. The claim was debunked and was just another ridiculous claim to slander Trump’s name.
You can like it or not but come January, Trump is OUR president. There is nothing you can do about it. I understand many of you are upset, but I ask only one thing, give the man a chance. He has done a lot of good on his seventy years on earth and I believe he will be an excellent president.
